So one of my axies got sick really bad where all but one of his gills fell off. When these gill deteriorated, they remained as "nubby" gills. It's been close to two months now and he has recovered and has grown a lot. Every other part of his body that fell off has regenerated. I was wondering if his gills will ever regrow back to the length their were before and look as full as they were before? It seems like they are not growing back at all.

Gills probably won't return to their original size/"featheriness", how did he get sick?

Shorten version: When I first got Rex, I kept him in a small 1 gallon tank with no filtration. I barely knew anything and I did a 100% water change with research grade distilled water. Result? He shriveled up because of the ion imbalance in the water. 5/6 gills fell off half of the way, the tip and top portion of his fin fell off, and his right arm development was compromised as his digits didn't properly separate and he is left with three digits on the right hand.

Yikes, well, I'm happy to hear with a little research he is bouncing back and on his way to being a nice healthy axie.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
