Hi guys,
my melanoid axolotl Quetzo is pooping but yesterday her poop seemed to be still hanging in her. i thought i was just being silly, but it seems that today she still has it.....not only is this gross she hasnt eaten in four days. the temperature in the tank tank is stable, and her diet consists mostly of beef and worms with the occasional prawn (peeled tail off)

what seems to be the problem?

If you are worried about her passing her waste the best thing to do is pop her in some cold (dechlorinated) water, or in the fridge, the cold helps them to 'go'.

I would fridge her for a couple days. I have no doubt that the beef is the problem. It is to tuff for them to digest. If you find an axolotl that can eat a cow I would say stay away from the waters edge!! Stick to soft axie pellets and natural foods like worms and soft insects.

yeah, thats reasonable. starting today im going to feed her main on earthworms, though shes tried slugs and snails and just hates them. are crickets okay or will their exoskeleton be hard to digest?she wont take meal worms either. shes fussy.

I have heard both sides on the cricket discussion, but the main problem with them is they need to be cared for themselves in order to carry the proper nutrients an axolotl needs. I have heard they chitin exoskeleton might be a bit hard to digest, but some people point out that crickets are similar to insects they might eat in the wild. But if you do decide to use crickets, make sure they are gut loaded prior to feeding.

Time to fridge her for a couple days. That should help her pass whatever is bothering her.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
