I just got my first axolotl yesterday! She is beautiful and I love her. She is 8 inches long and I was wondering if her "freckles" were common - I haven't seen many with freckles.

Wow, that is a beautiful axolotl! Your picture was having a few issues loading..so I hope you don't mind if I repost it for everyone to see.

Could you possibly provide a picture of her entire enclosure? Many new owners overlook certain aspects of their tank that may need improvement. Unfortunately, some pet stores provide inaccurate information, and a little guidance from experience owners can greatly improve an axie's quality of life.

she is pretty! i hope you have a long, happy, healthy life with her!

hi dbuckle2

Very pretty axolotl! I just love leucistics when they have freckles like this! That may or may not be because my own axolotl has freckles. xD

As others have said, make sure to have a good read around on this forum to find out lots of good tips that you may not already know. Good luck!

Very CUTE axie! mine has freckles too!
<=== my profile pic is my axie her name is rosie she doesnt have as many freckles as you axie though do you know how old your axie is and does it have a name? :D

Nice pic and a gorgeous axie. I would consider posting that one for the 2011 calendar comp.
cheers

Is has been a picky eater since I got her. Any suggestions? She was being fed freeze dried krill when I got her. She seemed interested in it for awhile and started to changer her diet over towards night crawlers. Is it normal for axolotls to be picky with their food?

Some axies have different preferences. A lot of them prefer live food over frozen, but I have heard many stories of picky Axolotls.

HI dbuckle do you have gravel in your axolotl tank??
Mel

I have river rocks of different sizes, they aren't too big or too small - I bought them.

I think Mel asked that because in your picture it looks like the Axie is resting on gravel of an inappropriate size.

The gravel she is resting on is a few pieces of the gravel from her old tank. I can upload photos of her current rocks later today if you'd like.

Pictures of the entire tank would be great, but good to know you have changed the substrate.

Yeah, it was just coz i could see the small stones in the pic.
Some people arn't aware not to keep them on gravel, good to know he isn't any longer :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
