I have a 3 month old leucistic and a 1 year old wild type axolotl that are sick. Yesterday I did a 40% water change to help with green algae water. I treated the water with conditioner and algae killer. Within a few minutes the axie's gills looked like they were peeling. I did another water change, this time no algae killer. Not eating. This morning the little one was laying on its back so I put him in the fridge. Any ideas about what I did wrong, or how to fix the problem?

What product did you put in the tank? It seems that is definitely the issue. Axolotls are extremely sensitive, and these chemicals could have easily harmed them.

I am still very new at this but from what i have read online and been told it sounds like the water has gone through too many changes in such a short time. They get very use to their enviornment and are sensative to changes. I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong and good luck with your lil ones.

Definately agree with Shizeric, Whatever you used is harmful.
Remove all water and replace with fresh dechlorinated water.

You can use spring water (deer park or poland springs) rather than using the conditioner you used. Also, make sure if you are using tap water..you let it sit for 24-48 hours to dechlorinate it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
