Hi guys,

quick question for you:

i currently feed my axies earthworms with occasional cherry shrimp and bloodworm treats. i know this is plenty and they've been growing but I'd like to expand the treat part of the diet to include dragon fly lavae. Does anyone know of a UK supplier of these or do those that use them source them from local ponds/reserves?

tx

Hi If you use livefood from ponds you may introduce nasty hitch hikers. I feed my axies prawns, mussel and most things you can find at a fish counter

hope this helps

Earthworms are the best food for axolotl. My guys also get the occasional slugs and woodlice from the garden. I also use amphibian pellets. Pretty much anything else should only be used once in a blue moon.

Dragon fly larvae are predators with jaws that can give a nasty bite. I know there is another thread advocating all sorts of foodstuffs but earthworms alone are very well balanced.

I like seeing dragon flies in the wild. I do not want their larvae in any of my tanks!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
