I am fast approaching the end of my first week and I have read a lot of contradictory advice. For the end of my first week should I do a complete water change and clean the tank, just change all the water, change half water etc? This will be the start of my weekly clean so any advice on what I should do or any links to do with this and salt baths and fridging would be appreciated.

Don't do a full water change as this will mess up your water chemistry.Best to do 20% changes weekly (depending on your water levels of nitrate ammonia and nitrite ) I'm sure someone will be able to help you further. I remember reading a topic on this forum but i cant find it, on tank cycles and how to maintain a good balance.

Hi, if you've been doing daily water changes and getting rid of poo daily then you dont need a weekly change today. Once you have your test kit and your tank has fully cycled you will need to do water changes when the tests suggest you need to. Not always weekly. Dont clean any hides or decorations as these will start having beneficial bacteria growing on them. Well done on surviving your first week! Mel .

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
