I have been feeding my fire-bellies newt pellets but they haven't been eating lately. So i tried feeding them each a small earthworm. They ate them each very fast. Is that Ok to feed them? Is it better to feed them live food? Is it good to vary the diet?

Earthworms are the definitive, unchallenged, superfood for caudates, there´s just nothing better.
You should feed an staple of worms, and vary the diet with the pellets, frozen bloodworms, small crickets, waxworms, isopods, tubifex, small slugs, artemia, frozen gammarus, etc....
Live foods are always better, but some commercially available frozen foods are a very decent choice when used as part of a healthy diet, and they are very practical for you.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
