The white tips of the toes signifies sexual maturtity. I think at 14inches your axolotl still has a little bit of growing to go, but not much.

As long as the other axolotl is the same size and you have a big enough tank with plenty of hides you will be fine. Also feeding at other ends of the tank can also prevent any accidental bites. If you do not wish to raise babies I would highly suggest an axolotl the same sex as your one.

Thanks for the advice. I have only owned 'Charlie' for one week. He seems ok - sometimes inquisitive- sometimes lasy! His gills are always raised, not forward but never resting? Is this an issue?

Yes they are lazy creatures arn't they!

As long as they don't point forward. The gills don't lie against them usually.

Hope this helps,

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
