I just went to the pet shop I got my two Axolotls from a couple weeks ago. They only had two left and they were both showing final stages of stress, ( they were both covered by white pigment and skin looked 'rusty') I am so angry they are still selling them and ignored me when I told them they were about to die. they were on gravel and had a very strong current

Is there anything I can do, like report them to the RSPCA, or is this just common in shops that they have a short life span?

For pet shop axolotls this is unfortunetly the usual fate.
You would be better off making up a care sheet and handing it to them, or at least ask them to hand it out to buyers!

I really wanted to buy them just so they could be comfortable for a few days, but my tank is not fully cycled and I dont have a spare. Its just a shame that some one is going to buy a new pet and see it die!

Try to resist buying them. I know it is incredibly hard not to want to rescue them, but if you buy them the pet shop may well end up getting new stock to neglect through their ignorance. Generally most places hope for a fast turn over of stock, it is not really in their interest to nurture what they have. The best thing you can do is print off, or even just give them the web address of Axolotls: The Fascinating Mexican Axolotl and the Tiger Salamander to the store manager. Let the RSPCA know what you have seen, but don't hold your breath.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
