I have 3 axolotl babies,2 of them this morning when i woke up had very twisted tails and looked unwell, they are in a tank 7inches x 4 inches. They are about 2cm long,I am doing daily water changes, feeding on daphnia and brine shrimp, what am I doing wrong, they arrived in the post as newly hatched babies,my husband thinks the journey was too much for them,ph level is normal and they have water that is about 2 inches high:confused::confused:

Curled tails are signs of stress. What is the temp of the water? Such a small volume of water can heat quickly. What are you using to treat the water? Chlorine is literally a killer. Check the parameters of your water to make sure nothing else is wrong as well. I have 4 juvies who were shipped to VA from FL and all are thriving. Good luck! Shannon

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
