Hello everyone, I am a new member to this website and just have a couple of questions. I recently bought a "baby dinosaur" from the mall here in our town. I did some research and supposedly this thing is called an "Axolotl". We have had it for about 3 weeks now and I have noticed that his feathery things have shrunk tremendously. I have combed the internet to find out what is wrong and it keeps telling me along with the pet store that he is "morphing." Can anyone please tell me what I need to do? My kids have really become attached to "Rufus" and he now swims quickly to the top when they feed him worms.

Thanks a bunch!!

Welcome to caudata! The axolotls can morph into adults if you let them, I think its something to do with iodine. But they could also be tiger salamanders, as suggested. you should start getting a terrestrial tank ready for the adult.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
