Question: How many Axolotls is ok for a 4ft tank?

rule is 10 gallons per adult axolotl. 4 ft should be about 40 to 50 gallon. Probably about 5 axolotls. Of course you didn't give height and width so the gallons is just a guess.

My aquarium is 48inches x15x12 inches but not filled to the very top

I would just stick with 3 adults. There is a lot less chance of issues arising with a small group.
While we are on the subject......
would 2 adult axies be comfy in a 30" long by 12" tank? I think they are 20 gallons or are called 20 longs anyways.
I found a cute Gold albino baby I want :happy:
I have a 2 foot tank now with my 1 axie and I know that would be too small for 2.
So I have been looking for longer tanks but can only find 20 longs and or HUGE tanks that are way to big for me now.

Yes, a 20 gallon long (30"x12"x12") would be ok for 2 adults Axolotls. ONLY because it is a 20 gallon long, and the footprint is large enough to accommodate 2 adults.

Thorninmyside:Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation+1

Clareclare:Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?+1
