What is the minimum tank size for an adult axolotl?

Would a 20" x 12" x 16 or 18" (L x W x H) be suitable, or would it have to be a 24" tank be better?

EDIT:

The tank would be:

50 cm length, 34cm width and 49 cm height (64 litres I think it said)

I've heard that the minimum of a tank is 10 gallons.
Also, the bottom space is more important than the height of a tank.
And an adult Axolotl is about 25-30cm long - So it requires a fairely large tank.

Personally i find a standard 10galon to be too small. It´s the recommended minimum volume for even a single Cynops....which are a fraction of the size of an axolotl...
A standard 20gallon would be my idea of the bare minimum for an adult.

I think 10 gallon is way too small too.

So 20+ gallons for a single adult. Thanks :)

I recommend the tank be at least 80 cm long (100 is better - more is more! :D ) and 40 cm deep for a single axolotl. It'd also then be large enough for two - some would say even three, but I think that's pushing it. Phrases like "with enough hiding places" make me nervous.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
