My golden albino isn't blind, really, but his eyesight is so bad he has a lot of trouble finding the PVC pipe I put in for his hide. The other axolotl has no trouble finding her own house or the albino's, but my poor albino ends up in the corner most of the day, or bumping around the tank. When he manages to find his hide he stays in it all day until the leucistic kicks him out.

I'm wondering if there are any tricks out there for helping him out, or some kind of hide he can find more easily.

Thanks!

Like lea said, nothing to worry about.

If you wanted and room allows, you could add some more hides or add some plants to his preferred corner. Some of mine don't use the pvc pipes at all, preferring the plants.

Yep, they certainly are 'special need's' animals, I recommend a high visibility vest and hard hat, ensure every entrance and exit is clear of obsticales with clear signage and ramp access.

My guys look so awkward sometimes! I also agree with Shannon one of mine much prefers a dark corner by the background and some plants, They also push eachother around quiet a bit. I am sure it is affectionate:p

They have poor eye-sight anyway. I think this is caused by simple differences in their preferences.
If the tank is well-stablished, the animal is familiar with it and there are hides but it doesn´t use them, it´s simply because it doesn´t want to, simple as. However, i agree that providing plant cover would be good. Offering a variety of visual barriers and hides is always good.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
