My name is Thomas. I've been interested in reptiles and amphibians my whole life. I've lived out in the woods nearly all my life and have encountered several different species of salamanders. Recently, I had the opportunity to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of a local fish hatchery to see their hellbender breeding program. Ever since, I've been fascinated with hellbenders in particular.

Welcome to the forum Thomas. I have to say, I am truly jealous of your tour. Did they allow you to take any photos?

Unfortunately no. They had both suspecies: Ozark and Eastern hellbender. Fortunatley, the hatchery has had success breeding both. They took back into the nursery where they had several juvenile hellbenders. Our guide threw a handful of amphipods in the tank and the hellbenders came running. If you've never seen a hellbender eat, it's kind of funny. They suck up the amphipods with such force that they jump up in the water.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
