What is the maximum depth for the water to keep these in? Is 10-12 inches to much? There will be terrestrial area to

I'm not sure but make sure they have plants/rocks so that they can climb out of the water if they don't want to swim it.

No such thing as too deep (at least not for domestic purposes xD i doubt anyone is going to provide 3m of water depth :p)
Dipsy is right, though, make sure to have lots of plants, they need them to hang out on and reach the surface effortlessly.

They won´t need any land if they are healthy and well housed. Please avoid obtaining them from pet-shops...they are all WC and will give you problems (plus you will condemn more animals to replace them).
