Becoming a member of this forum is an adventure into a new world I never, ever thought I would be a part of....and it all started with a tortoise. Critters of one sort or another have always been a part of my life and after the usual ordinary pets I wanted something different. I became curious about a tortoise at a pet store and bought it. This led to various other turtles and then I found out dart frogs were available to ordinary people. This led to various frogs including D. auratus. Mentored by an amphibian expert where I volunteer I am slowly being sucked into the world of salamanders and newts. Aye, I have met the indomitable Sludgemunkey on Frogforum and after a paper he wrote. So, we shall see where this watery safari will lead. :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
