Okay, it has been an admittedly long week. Thanks to everyone who has stuck it out and tried to help with all my problems.

Last night I found a few drops of blood under one Axolotl. I read tons of posts with the search terms "bleeding" or "blood" and "Axolotl" and none seemed to address my problem. I thought it might be the sharp edges on the plastic plants so I removed those. I put him in a small clear container so I could see his belly and it looked like he had little cuts (slightly raw) under his neck. Yet, I hadn't seen the underside of an Axolotl before since they sorta prefer to be upright, so I didn't have much to compare it to.

I left him overnight and tried not to check in too much so I wouldn't stress him out. This morning I got up and wanted to make sure his container was as clean as possible to reduce any chance of infection. While I was wiping it down I noticed a few sharp bits protruding from the plastic where the hot plastic was poured into the mold. Then I decide THIS must be the culprit of the random blood. I get out two kinds of sand paper and first sanded it down with coarse grit sand paper and then smoothed it back out with fine grit sand paper. No sooner do I do this then I notice that his neighbor is leaving little dots of blood! So I move him into a de-sharped, clean container and check his out... but his has NO SHARP BITS along the bottom.

They both _seem_ fine. ie. They respond to light and touch. I am still concerned.

I feed them bloodworms (and have since I got them) but this looks distinctly different than any bloodworm feces I have seen. I saw several posts about blood coming from the gills but I haven't been able to witness that... it is possible though.

Any ideas of what it could be or what I could look for?

Anyone have photos of the underside of an Axolotl belly for me to compare it to?

Should I add Melafix to the water? If so, how much... I wasn't able to find a dilution recipe on here. I really don't want any infection!

I also read the article (Caudata Culture Articles - Sores) about wounds and sores but I can't find it!

Thank you in advance,
Kori

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
