Hi all, it's been a while since I've been on here :) don't think any of you would remember me :p

Anyway, I now have an eastern newt. It's an adult and not a red eft. The only problem is that he seems to stay more on his island (nearly all the time) than go into the water.

Is this normal?

Thanks.

newly transitioned animals always seem to linger, like a tiger who has morphed but still remains in the water even if land is present, or a CFBN that is supposed to be aquatic but lingers on the surface for longer.

as well there may be issues with your water parameters, maybe it's too warm or maybe the pH is wrong or maybe whatever else he might not like.

i wouldn't be too worried about this until it causes health problems or some similiar issues, just try to keep him moist and maybe check your water over (thermometer, pH, chlorine/choramine, ammonia).

also what are your water changes at? is it 100% or just partial? 100% water changes can be very stressful on aquatic animals and may deter them from going aquatic.

just make sure that the animal is healthy/happy and there shouldn't be any issues.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
