My Axolotl seems to fan its gills a lot. Is this normal or do I need to oxygenate the water more?

Gill fanning is normal when it isn't done excessively. How often is it flicking?

Hey violentJ (haha reminds me of ICP im sure that was one of thier names)

My axie does it alot when he's just sitting there, my water quality is good and got plenty of airation so dont think its that, sometimes he only fans one side of his gills, I dont really know what is normal behaviour as axies are always pretty bloody strange! Im sure someone will fill you in shortly!

Yeah its bout the same for Gomez probably bout 2-3 times a minute or there abouts!

If the flicking period happens every 2-3 seconds then there is a problem. If it is only a couple times a minute then it is completely normal.

You're right...the other ones name is Shaggy 2 Dope.;)

Thanks guys. It is a few times a minute so I won't worry then :)

As far as my username goes, yes I used to listen to ICP a lot as an angry young man lol

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
