Just thought I'd say hello - I've been lurking for a while gathering useful tips - as about 2 months ago my middle child persuaded me to purchase an axolotl.

After a number of early concerns - about water quality and feeding - we have settled down and are, I think, very happy.

Aaron, as we have named him (or her we are not sure yet!), is about 12 months old (leusistic type) and seems happy on a diet of earthworms (sourced from our garden/composter) and pelets - both of which he'll take from hand. Only got a 2ft by 1ft tank at the moment - and am trying to source something larger - but we have a nice range of plants and a hide and he/she seems very content. Main problem at the moment is keeping water temperature down - but judicious use of frozen plastic bottles with water in gets temperature below 20 at night.

If anyone has any tips on how best to determine the sex of our little baby (or in general) then gratefully received.

Cheers

Thanks.

I have been using treated water in the bottles since I noticed one had split (fortunately on getting it out of the freezer - not once in tank!).

Once I get around to it I'll post some pics on the axy forum - and hopefully get some views on what sex Aaron is.

Cheers

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
