Hi all. I have a male axolotl (doritos) he is about 3 years old. I am thinking of breeding axolotls but I am wondering if he is too small. He is about 15cm.

Thanks :)

3 years old and only 15cm long? Are you sure?
That´s highly irregular, if i´m not mistaken...

I think some axolotls can be stunted.
Not sure why, lack of food at the right age maybe, too low a temp whilst growing.
A woman on another forum mentioned one 4 or 5 inches that she says just stopped growing.
Someone else that came to get one from me said they had a breeding group that were only 8 inches.

I would say if he's 3 then he could breed ok.
Not sure if i'd breed one that seems a lot smaller than normal it could be a genetic problem.

Some genetic condition is certainly possible, after all axolotls are an absolute mess, they have been inbred and selected so much it´s no surprise mutations and deformities are a common thing.

I would also be wary of breeding such an individual...the result might be bad.

I think environmental factors are perhaps less likely, although that depends greatly on which conditions it has been kept on these 3 years. If you elaborate on it we might be able to make an educated guess.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
