Currently the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game treat salamanders under the regulations for fish. It is legal to keep only "ornamental fish" as pets. Their is no definitive list of what is allowed and what is not allowed. Each type of salamander is considered on a request basis. The contact person with DFG is Robert Piorkowski.

Robert has assured me it is o.k. to ship axolotls to Alaska.

Thanks Michael. I think it would also be informative if you reposted the text of the letter that you posted in the other thread (threads in the ad sections sometimes get deleted). It gives some additional hints about what kinds of species they would/wouldn't accept coming into the state of AK.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
