Hi everyone!

I have recently set up my axolotl tank without the axolotl to get all the water right. Being the smart cookie I am I thought it could be ok to leave the tank running while I was away for the weekend. When I got back my dad had decided to put four of his fantail fish in there to get the 'bacteria' going.

Surprise surprise they have laid eggs....

My tank has gone all murky, there are hundreds of eggs all over my once clean tank and I have no idea what I should do!

Do I leave the eggs in there for the axolotl to have his way with?

I really dont know what to do!

Thanks!

The murky water is most likely a factor of the cycling you had planned, aided by the waste and left over food from the goldfish (fantails?). The eggs are another matter. If they're viable they won't be a negative in regards to water quality. If they are dead or die, that's another matter. It's also, just a matter of time either way. If they're dead they'll decompose soon enough and your tank will continue to cycle. If they're alive they'll develop into fry and either become food for your axolotl or continue to develop. It would be my suggestion to leave the tank alone to continue through its cycling process.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
