I bought a freshwater pH master kit to help with my water (since I heard it's "important" to do that rather than just throw in water). I have no idea what i'm doing (although the instructions will help and I read the caudata culture article). What I really need help with is what numbers should my pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite...etc levels should be. Should I keep live plants in the water as I test?

Amm 0 - Nitrites 0 - nitrates <40 - PH 6.8 - 7.6 But 7.0 is better - Gen Hardness 140-180 - Temp 16-20 celcius 18 is better

And a partridge in a peeeear treeeeee .........

oh, and plants shouldn't make a difference to the redings

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
