My axolotl has medium sized gills , I know it sounds silly. I was just wondering is there a reason they are not really big like so many pictures I see of axolotls on this site? Is it a genetic thing or are there other factors?

It can be different things.
Water quality (bad water quality makes the gills shrink sometimes), fish in the same tank (they like to nibble axo-gills), attacks by tank mates, etc.

I think it depends. Has your axolotls gills changed in size at all? Axolotl gills appear to come in all different shapes and sizes! But if you're concerned it might be worth reading Rayson's replies to this post: http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...free-all/59249-axolotl-no-feathery-gills.html

I'm going to seem like some strange fangirl to that thread since this is the second time I've posted it tonight. Damn my forum lurking ways!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
