If the male axolotl wants to 'plant' his spermatophores in the tank do they actually stick to sand or do I have to give them a bare bottom tank if I want to breed? (Because I don't trust rocks and stuff like that)

They'll be fine on sand.
The spermatophores just sit on top of the sand waiting to be picked up.
Mine have bred 3 times on sand :D

Mine just bred on sand so it'll be fine. It's just cleaning up that's difficult XD

Same with me! If you can, before your female starts laying, move her to another tank. It makes such a mess with all the goo everywhere getting covered in sand. My tank will never be the same :(

Thanks :)
I'll keep the goo-part in mind :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
