Dear forum,

Annex IV of the Habitat Directive lists Triturus carnifex, Triturus cristatus and Triturus karelinii and Article 12(2) states:

“For these species, Member States shall prohibit the keeping, transport and sale or exchange, and offering for sale or exchange, of specimens taken from the wild, except for those taken legally before this Directive is implemented.”

It is therefore not illegal to keep these animals if they are of captive origin, but how is such origin of an individual newt proven? Thanks for your help.

Best wishes,
Des
