Is it just me, or is the axolotl invisible?

Since you have some ammonia, I would recommend doing daily partial water changes until it comes down. Be sure there isn't a current in the tank. Adding more rocks and other hides may help decrease any current and decrease stress.

Her tail tip does look curved but her gills look okay from what I can see. If you are worried about her being too stressed just stick her in the fridge for a day. Also, can she fit into her hide? The entrance looks small (and sharp)

Your ammonia is a bit high too, is your tank cycled? If you do small water changes daily this should help lower it. Make sure you clean up any poo or bits of food she hasn't eaten.

Sorry, this may not be the place but reading your parameters, I'm confused, don't you have to have some nitrites and/or nitrates to have ammonia b/c those eventually turn into ammonia? Just a question.... or is it that all the nitrites have already turned into ammonia so it's now at 0?

hi i am not an expert or anything but i noticed you have nothing covering the floor of the tank, and axies can get stressed trying to walk on the glass - id suggest some sand rocks or pebbles :)

axies don't get stressed by bare bottom, they don't mind it...

I don't think she looks stressed at all.

Is she eating?

Actually, axolotls can get stressed from a barebottom. My wild type hates it but my leucistic loves it so I have half barebottom and half river stones. Yet my other wild type loves barebottom, they are all different. Change to river stones or sand if you can and see if this helps.

No, the ammonia turns into nitrites which then turn into nitrates. So its OK to have a low nitrate reading as nitrates are less toxic than ammonia and nitrites and means the bacteria are doing their job at breaking it down.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
