To keep this simple, I will provide pictures later, but in the meantime, I have two Leuks. As they have grown, they have developed white patterns on the sides of their face, reaching up to the base of the gills. It looks like scar tissue that a human would have. It appears to be almost symmetrical, and there is none on the pinks of the gills themselves. Is this likely just normal color patterns for Axolotls of the pink variety?

Could the problem be heat stress?

This sounds unusal... have they had any cuts to their faces? The healing process can sometimes change the colour of the skin of the axolotl (a bit like scarring in humans)

Please post some pictures.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
