Java Moss Wall - Mesh setup

Hi all,

where on my big tank I have a nice dark 3D background on the small I simply have a piece of black card behind and tbh I don't like it.

I hate the image backgrounds you can get and so need something a bit different.

As I have a new found love of Moss Balls, I'm considering trying some Java Moss and using a wall mesh pack to gradually grow a full wall of moss on the back of the tank like below:

Anything I should be aware of or cautious of when using Java Moss?

As far as I know mate java moss is ideal so I wouldnt worry bout it! One thing tho is I think moss grows pretty slowly so It may take a little while to look as amazing as that pic but if you have the patience (ooh and money, moss is expensive £4.50 for a 2in square at my local!!! its an outrage!) If you are planning on getting shrimp itll be like shrimp heaven with all that moss!

Hiya Daz
I have recently started a moss wall in my 2 foot tank.

Unfortunately the moss i bought wasn't quite at its best. I carried on with it anyway. Its been up about 2 weeks and not much has happened so far. I am sticking with it and shall let you know of any development!

Christmas moss can also be used to create a wall.

Hang on in there. I started one in July and it's just starting to come through the mesh now

+1. In a low light low temp tank Java wont be so quick to come back and fill in the wall.

High wattage and a reptile UTH attached to the back really helps out lots but its not appropriate for Caudates.

I have been wanting to try Epiweb for the foundation of the moss. Its really cool stuff.

Moss backgrounds are really cool, and they look fantastic!
The only downside is that... It takes forever, and then some before it starts looking spectacular, especially in an Axy tank where conditions are not superb for growth.

But if you do have the patience, go for it! :happy:

Well I have all I need now, mesh, sucket cups, ties and a few bags of what looks to be great condition java moss.

I shall be constructing my Moss wall tonight and in true DK fashion will photograph all aspects for reference, which I'll post up here also.

Good luck ...

Quick tip - make sure you can easily remove the mesh / moss from the back of the tank because tiny bits of plant matter and stuff gather behind the mesh and you will need to get in there every couple of weeks or so.
Quick tip 2 - get some shrimp, they love the moss, will (should anyway) breed in your a axl tank and (I think they) will help keep your tank conditions good by eating all the bits of broken off plant matter which otherwise would break down in and pollute the water and leave only inert peat-like bits of matter behind.

thanks, my plan is for the tank to eventually become a shrimp tank anyway.
