This is the Melanoid I had picked up on my way to MARS. He had a bit of a easy time on the ride home. The only bad part of the ride was driving in Baltimore after I picked him up.

I noticed him over the last few days get a dull coat and now over the last two days its turned to this.

Its been a while since I had a Axolotl and to me it just looks like a hard time shedding but some links I found said it could be a skin condition as well.

Some link said a tea bath would ale either or but didn't state what kind of tea.

( the fine white flecks are grains of sand )

Anyone?

I'm more interested in this Tea Bath. I really cant find anything about it. Is it just regular Lipton Tea?

Helloo,
What temp do you have him at or has he been submitted to any high temps? dont know if its the cause but apparantly heat stress can cause white mucusy patches if that is what this image is (cant really tell to be honest doesnt, how would you describe it?) To get a better diagnosis from others you will need to provide full tank and water parameters as theres very little we could put it down to otherwise, test your water and post up tank size, temperature and test results and im sure some one out there will be able to point you in the right direction!

I hope someone has some answers for you!

Hello,

I believe tea baths consist of Black Tea (1 teabag/10 liters or 10 quarts water).

Hope this helps!

Also, my axie had this. It can be an infection or stress which causes shedding, it all went away with a couple of days in the fridge. The exact cause is unknown.

I have actually the same problem with my two wildtype axies (and maybe my albino and leucistic in the same tank too, but I can't really see it on them)

Suddenly they had that dully stuff on them. So I tested the water and nitrites and nitrates turned out to be too high somehow.... But now it's normal again (not their patchy skin but the water parameters) and they're acting a bit.... inactive or someting and two of them don't want to eat.....

So... Fridge?

Temps are around 74. It has been cooler like 72 around the time it started.

PH is around 6.8 steady never changing and Nitrates and Ammonia is in check. Also my wild type in the same tank is fine.

Heat has been tricky though. The last 3 days or so it spiked back up between 88 and 95 F. I been taking care of that with some cold packs I made out of Tupperware.

Heat was something I have been taking into consideration but I dont think its the cause really.

About how long do I soak them in the Tea Bath?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
