Are axolotls, tiger salamanders, and andersoni different species or just subspecies? There scientific names would classify them as different species, but they can interbreed and produce firtil offspring. This confuses me as I thought to different species couldn't produce firtil offsping, like ligers and mules.

I believe the Mexicanum and Andersoni are subspeices of the Ambystoma family, as are tiger salamanders and all other Ambystoma. I don't know that much about the subject, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

Technically, all of them are separate species. These days, species are defined based on their genetic distance from one another. Many separate species of herps can interbreed, so that's not a hard rule any more.
