Been making a lot of threads lately....
Anywho, My axolotls are about 4 months, I believe (though I'm not positive.) and are about 9 centimeters in length. I currently have them separated to avoid injuries and cannibalism. At what age or size is it safe to combine them?
And at what point will I likely be able to determine their genders?

What size tank do you plan on putting them in? As long as they have enough room/barriers/hides you can have them together now. I'd guess you have another 5-6 months because you can definitely ID their sexes.

They're currently in a 20 gallon long tank. I'm considering making them something larger in the future, but this one will be their home for a good while. Each has 2 hides currently.

Do you have them in a tank with a divider?

Mine have been together since they were babies, admittedly not without the odd injury.
As Eric said if you put hides and things in and feed at opposite ends of the tank they should be fine together.

When they are a year - 18 months you should be able to figure out gender.
Some you can tell early some take aaaaages.

Yes, I have them on opposite ends of the tank with the filter in the middle, partitioned off so that the intake and waterflow doesn't disturb them. I think I may invest in a biowheel or canister filter in the future, as I don't feel this one is the most efficient.
I attatched some quick pictures. I apologize for the low quality.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
