Hi
i have concerns for my axolotl Daiki as a few days ago he started to get like a light dusting of white on his gills & a couple of white spots on his body, however his gills are still pretty frilly as I'm keeping an eye on them, but concerned in case this is a fungus. I've had him 3 weeks 3 days he is still a juvenile and about 4 & half inches long also a wild type. I am doing daily water changes and vacuuming up his waste. He also has a tank buddy in with him but i can't tell if his mate has any spots or dusting on his gills either as he is a white albino. my test results show
Ammonia - 2.0ppm
Nitrite - 0.50ppm
Nitrate - 80ppm
Temp - 19 degrees celcius
All of these i know are high and i have the correct measurements for them, i'm trying to lower them by doing daily water changes, could this be whats affecting him?
i have included pictures Thanks Francesca x

What are you feeding them?
And how often?

They look like they could eat a bit more.

I cant tell from the photos if this is fungus. Does it look cotton wooley?

You need to get those levels down asap. How much are you changing daily?

i feed them frozen bloodworm, frozen daphina, tubifex cubes & brine shrimp all mixed,
i feed them once a day, is that not enough?
it just looks like he's got talcum powder on his gills, sorry for the picture quality he kept moving and the light doesnt help with seeing it with the naked eye.
im doing a 20% water change daily & yes i'm hoping the levels will soon go down
thanks for your reply x

heya thanks for replying :D I've had a look at the page you gave me but Daiki's doesn't seem to be as bad as what them other axolotls have had it, sorry for poor picture quality I'll give a go at trying to get a clearer picture and post them. He eats very well & is still active also still his friendly self :D I'll keep check over the next few days, would any of you recommend a tea bath or salt bath or would this be too stressful? thanks again x

They would be better eating earthworms.
I would still feed daily til their tummies are as wide as their head.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
