My axolotl tank gets a layer of white kinda mucus slim on the top of it from time to time, I have been taking most of it away when I clean it out but now I am wondering if it is good slime?

I never take all of it away, but should I let it build up a bit or take all of it away?

The slime just means you have the water nice and still for your guy/gal. It's more of an annoyance than anything else...

Some people just float a paper towel on top to remove this from time to time or like I do, use an airstone to agitate the surface so the slime (oily looking layer) doesn't form.

Don't think it's anything to worry about, i get that too and i just remove it when i clean the tank (i think i read somewhere it is caused from proteine from the food and such, but i could be wrong) if you have a filter that's breaking the surface you will see that the slimey/oily stuff will probably turn into foam instead in some places

Ok thanks, I thought it would be something like that, my filter is about 2cm below the water surface so maybe forcing it too the top, anyway shall not worry about it!

I have the same thing in both of my tanks. Never had problems with it. It only makes the glass a bit yucky sometimes...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
