hi there, my name is steve, i'm from kansas. i'm interested in getting some newts. it's been years since i've kept any, and i want to get back into it with my son now, he's really interested in newts and salamanders. i'm currently setting up a 40 gallon habitat. i'm not really sure what kind i want to start off with, i dont wan't to get too complicated untill i get back into the groove.

Welcome to the fourm Steve! Pleurodeles waltl is a great species to start out with. They are readily available, cheap, and extremely easy to care for.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
