recently i have been noticing a large number of flaky white bits in my tank, i do have white sand on the bottom of the tank however it is fine grain and the stuff floating around the tank is much lighter, i was worried his skin was unhealthy, i can't seem to see any skin cocming off him and he has been acting as normal, energetic, no straneg behaviour. just wondering if perhaps anyone else has experianced this issue? the water is also perhaps a little alkaline. but not to much, veryy close to neutral.
cheers

Your tank being a little alkaline is not a problem, axolotls can handle a wide range of pH.

How long has your tank been set up? Since you mentioned you have sand, if it wasn't rinsed out enough (it is a pain to get EVERYTHING out), these particles could be some stray "floaters" that got missed. Also take a look around your tanks and to see if something else might be leeching off some of these little flakes.

If your little guy looks healthy, is eating, and is active - I really wouldn't worry too much about it. A partial water change or so should eliminate them.

Does the tank have a filter? Is the flakey material building up in the filter? How long has the tank been set up?

the tanks been set up for a good 3 months or more. okay thanks :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
