Hi everyone,

To start off, I noticed one night that my one axolotl, Berk, was looking pretty bloated. So after immediately looking up what to do here, i decided to fridge him to try and pass what i assumed to be a rock he ate. After about a day of being in the fridge, i actually brought him to my school's radiography room and took an x-ray of him (I'm in college to become a veterinary technician so of course my teacher was very interested in seeing what this little guy was going to be).
It turns out Berk actually swallowed 4 rocks and being only 4 1/2 inches i was worried about him. So, i kept him in the fridge and he's been in there for about 3 now, i've been changing the water daily for him and everything, but he has neither thrown up any of the rocks or passed them.
I thought i would try feeding him a bit, since i read at one point it would be easier for him, but he refuses any food i try to feed him.

I'm not sure what to do and he's currently back in the fridge. It would be great if someone could help with something else i could do to try and pass these rocks :(.

I can't help you with advice on helping him pass the stones, as I've never encountered this issue, but I can strongly recommend while he's in the fridge, change the substrate in his tank to bare or sand if you haven't already done so. I've seen people on this forum have their impacted axy's in the fridge for weeks at a time getting them to pass the stones they ate.

I'm in progress of changing over the substrate, its currently in the mail :)

Would you be able to post a picture of his original tank set up, and also his Xray if possible ? It might help show other owners the dangers of having the incorrect substrate.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
