I live in Hawaii and I recently purchased a tiger salamander larvae from the pet store, where they referred to it as a "waterdog". I have always been interested in tiger salamanders, and have never seen them in stores here before. After about a two weeks my larvae began to change quite rapidly. In almost 48 hours his gills had receded, his tale became round and his eyes began to look more pronounced. After 72 hours you could no longer see his gills and he began to breach himself on the artificial log in his tank. I lowered the water in the tank until he began to come completely out of the water. Then I moved him into a terrarium using damp, unbleached paper towels for temporary substrate, until I can locate some quality sphagnum moss here on the island. My questions are: does the metamorphosis usually occur this quickly? It took only about 72 hours! And, does anyone have any tips on how to keep my terrarium cool? the air temperature here often rises into the mid 80's F and it seems a little hot for the poor guy.
