Hey guys and girls,

I have a male and female who first bread about 6-8 months ago. Initially i noticed my male had laid his spermaphores on a log and then a month or so later my female laid around 250-300 eggs.

Since then she has laid more eggs pretty much every month but only 20-50 each time.
I have not noticed an spermaphore since the first time so its like she is retaining them.

Has anyone elese come across this? Is this bad? She seems healthy and eats quite well (except when she is actually laying) but im a little worried that it may be harming her.

Thanks in advance

Brent

Laying eggs does take a lot out of the female...and is a stressful process. If you are worried about her, you could separate them.

Hi Brent
I too have one that lays every month. I have decided to remove her from the tank. As Eric says it is stressful for her I would definitely seperate.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
