Hi guys,

I just bought an aquarium chiller for my 60L tank and instead of buying a pump for the chiller, I decided to upgrade my internal filter (Eheim 2010 pickup) with a external cannister (Fluval 105). Just wondering what the procedure is for swapping the filters over? Do I have to run both for a few weeks??

Cheers

Paul

Certainly wouldn't hurt to run them together until the Fluval is seeded with beneficial bacteria. That's what I would do. You could probably get away with just transferring some seasoned media from the old one to the other, but by running both you'll reduce the chance for a small cycle and white, cloudy water. You may invariably get a little of that when you disengage the Eheim, but it shouldn't be a big problem unless there is a great disparity between the sizes. Just watch your readings if you see that bacterial discrepancy of white, cloudy water. Again, in a mature tank, it shall probably be a mild imbalance that should correct itself with little worries. ;)

I wouldn't run both filters at the same time. This will cause a lot of current. If your internal filter has a removable media, take that and put it inside the canister filter. But bacteria grow on everything in your tank: the walls, the substrate, the decoration. If your tank is not heavily stocked, you won't have a problem with just turning on the new filter.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
