:dizzy: I am getting algea in my tank and was wondering if first, would snails eat the algea or add to the mess? and second, would it be ok to put snails in with my axolotls or would the axolotls try and eat them??

I think it depends on the type of snail ... the small rounded pond snails are OK (in my humble opinion), as long as they don't grow large enough to pose an impaction hazard. The pointy 'trumpet snails' are not advisable on account of the danger of internal injury when they get eaten. Your axolotl will absolutely definitely try to eat any snail it comes across. On no account should you introduce large snails like apple snails. Also avoid trapdoor snails. They have a sort of door across their shell opening which can trap a lotl limb when the snail closes it.
Personally I like snails in my tank (as long as they are what I consider to be 'safe') because I think they help to maintain good clean tank conditions. I would also recommend adding some cherry shrimp for the same reasons. They do tend to get eaten though.

well my axies are only about 4-4 1/2 inches long, there is 1 little round looking snail in there that must have came on some plants that a friend gave me, will it harm the axies to eat the snails? or the cherry shrimps? since they are not full grown?

Also bear in mind that if a large snail were to die in your tank it wreaks havoc with the tanks chemistry, unless you have exceptional filtration. Almost a guaranteed ammonia spike unless you have a good sized tank...

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
