Hi, my sister but me two fire bellied south american newts for my birthday. one ate the other one within a week. the other one is now 17 years old. I clean his tank once a year and feed him live bloodworm once a week. The shopkeeper (same one ) has never asked me why I am buying the bloodworm! Is there anything else these little buggers will eat tried everything

I think you're a bit confused on your species. Firebellied newts (Cynops species) are from Asia, and as far as I know, there are no salamanders from South America. But 17 years is a pretty good run for a newt, even if your methods of keeping are... unconventional. Definitely try earth worms or waxworms. I've never had an animal turn their nose up at waxworms. with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
