As I am looking to reacquaint myself with all things 'Newtonian' (wait, that can't be right): are there any books that are absolutely indispensable for care of caudates? I have quite a few but they mostly deal with North American species. I'm interested in having a good reference for European species, especially. What can you folks recommend?

There is a book called Newts and Salamanders by Frank Indiviglio that might be useful. It has some basic care chapters on North Amercin newts and sals and also on European and Asian newts and sals. It also talks a little about the types of enclosures for different caudates. Its not really a field guide but a care book which has some facts about newts and sals. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Alex. I'll see if my book guy has it at the next Hamburg, Pa show I go to. I appreciate the tip! ;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
