I've recently noticed that my fire bellied newt (which I purchased from an aquarium store) hasn't been going into the water at all. He hardly moves from his corner in the tank. My other Newt seems to be doing well though so it's not anything wrong with the tank. The only other things in the tank are two aquarium snails. When I tried to feed it today it hardly reacted to the food and shrank further back into its corner. I tried to take a look at it to see what was wrong. I noticed that it wasn't using its back right leg when crawling. I checked the foot and saw that its toes were incredibly short and looked like they were kind of stuck together ( the foot also looks abnormally large or bloated). Right now its it's laying in it's corner with its eyes almost closed. Is it hurt? Or is this some kind of infection? Will it be alright? I'm really worried for him :(

Not a newt expert, but from the reading I've done store bought firebellies tend to not be in the best of shape. It's possible that you got a sick firebelly. If the other one is acting fine and happy I would quarentine the sick one. Also not going in the water is a sign of bad water quality. If the other newt has no problem with going in the water I'm guessing this isn't the problem, but checking the water parameters couldn't hurt. I would stick the sick newt in a quarantine tank with fresh water, and try to get it to eat something.

Well I went back to the store and talked to the employees about the situation (their store is pretty good so the animals were in good condition), they said that with these being the only simptoms my newt probably isn't sick but was having problems with the other newt. Apparently either the other newt was territorial or it wasn't getting enough to eat. Just to be safe I made a new tank for my newt and put some meds inside to help it regrow its toes while keeping it isolated. Hopefully it recovers soon :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
