I am a high school science teacher in west-central Indiana. I teach Biology, Environmental Science and Genetics. I have 150 students this semester, many of whom are interested in :someday becoming axolotl owners:happy:
Currently I have 6 adult axolotls, 2 male melaniod, one male albino, one male golden albino, one wild-type female, and one leucistic (spelling) female. I acquired my axolotls from the axolotl colony at the University of Kentucky.
Recently my leucistic female and a melanoid male mated. We are attempting to raise some of the eggs, despite them being first spawn so far they are doing well.
The axolotls are useful when teaching genetics and are a big attraction in the classroom in general. They are much beloved as classroom pets as well, and there are always plenty of volunteers to help clean tanks and feed.
I was able to raise my wild-type female from a batch of eggs I purchased from Micheal Shrom. He has been super helpful with axie advice.
I am hoping to use this forum as a sounding board as I am the only axolotl keeper that I am aware of in my area. Thanks to all of you for all of your good advice so far!
