Sorry for all the questions guys. xD I received my axolotl last saturday, and he ate a few pieces of Earthworm. And now I can't get him to eat one bite! Is this normal? I might just be paranoid. He's only about 3-4 inches, and I keep the aquarium at 50 degrees farenheight.

Also, his gills are a kind of pale pink and not very feathery.

Is this normal? And how many times should I feed him a week?

Much thanks!

Keep offering food. Sometimes they're a little weird while they settle in. At that size, I'd feed it 3-4x a week, if not more.

By keeping it at 50f (a little chilly, but not dangerously so), you'll lower its metabolism. Because of that, it'll eat less, AND its gills will be paler because it has less oxygen demand.

As for the feathery-ness, that might improve. If your water has a lot of oxygen in it, your axolotl won't need extra-feathery gills because there's a lot of oxygen.

What method do you recommend for feeding him? I've tried feeding him with tweezer and leaving the food on the sand near him but he doesn't even seem interested in it. I'm at a loss at what to do.

I hear wiggling it in front of them with your fingers or tweezers works pretty good.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
