I just purchased a male and a female Axolotl. I want to put them in my outdoor Koi ponds that vary from 18" to 36" deep. I live in north central Oklahoma and have continuous water circulation and aeration pumps so the top of the ponds never freeze solid. Will the Axolotls do OK through the winter? Are they similar to the Koi in not needing to be fed through out the winter once the water is cooler than 50 degrees F? The ponds are mostly in the shade in Summer and the outside temperature rarely gets to 100 degrees F. Will they be ok in the Summer? Are they compatable with Koi or should they be in a separate pond and if so, why?
Thanks for helping educate a new guy!

DO NOT KEEP AXOLOTLS WITH KOI!!! The koi will nibble/eat the Axolotls, and the water quality would not be suitable. Axolotls do not do well in water over 70 degrees, so even if it gets CLOSE to 100, that's completely inappropriate.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
