Hi guys,

Soo I woke up this morning to find eggs in my axie tank. I don't know what to do, but would be really interested in trying to hatch and care for a couple. I have so many questions. How do I know if the eggs are fertilized? Would 12 eggs be a decent amount to try hatching? Would the eggs be okay in a 5 gallon tank to start? Where can I buy daphnia? This is all unexpected the breeder that sold me my axies assured me they were both males. any comments tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly slow down and breathe! It's gonna be a couple weeks till they hatch.

Secondly there are many people that will be willing to take the extra eggs off your hands.

Thirdly there are a lot of people here that culture daphnia and someone will be willing to send you a starter culture of them.

Lastly a 5.5 gallon tank is huge for a start with larvae and you may want to consider using a small tupperware bowl for your hatch container. You will be able to keep the larvae in this container for the first few weeks after they hatch as well.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
